Cárdenas Presents $750,000 to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY — On Friday, Congressman Tony Cárdenas (CA-29) visited the new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Expansion at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center (PHCMC) to announce $750,000 in Community Project Funding for PHCMC’s NICU expansion project. This project expanded the capacity of PHCMC’s NICU, allowing PHCMC staff to care for more infants and avoid transferring vulnerable infants to other NICU’s, separating families.

“Providence Holy Cross Medical Center has been caring for our community for decades, and this NICU expansion will help them care for more infants,” said Congressman Cárdenas. “I’m proud to have secured funding for this project. Having your baby in the NICU is already a very difficult experience. Ensuring that parents can be near their babies while they are in the NICU is an important step towards making an NICU stay less stressful for everyone involved.”

“Providence Holy Cross Medical Center extends its deepest gratitude to Congressman Cárdenas for his commitment to our community and patients,” said Bernie Klein, M.D., the hospital’s chief executive. “The expanded NICU will enable us to keep the care of our medically fragile newborns in our community.”

Since 1961, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center has been a cornerstone of the health care system in the San Fernando Valley. Their Level III California Children’s Services-approved NICU was always at capacity, meaning vulnerable infants had to be transferred to other NICU’s, separating families. To better serve their community, Providence expanded the NICU, officially moving patients into the space in September 2023.

For the second time since 2009, Congress passed Community Project Funding for FY23, money requested by Members of Congress to meet the needs of their district. Congressman Cárdenas submitted 15 requests to the Appropriations Committee, all of which were passed in the Fiscal Year 2023 appropriations federal funding package. The over $26 million going to the Northeast San Fernando Valley is already supporting job creation, youth programs, mental health care, community empowerment, improvements to healthcare, and more.
